20th-21st April
We got to Nelson Lakes National Park at lunch time and went to the DOC centre there for more information on what walks there were in the area. We then took a 5 minute walk to Lake Rotoiti, the smallest of the two lakes in the national park, and had our lunch overlooking the lake and it surrounding mountains- the St. Arnaud Ranges and Mt. Robert. The snow capped alps were just in the background! It was beautiful and exactly, if not better, how it looked in all the booklets! We relaxed for the rest of the day at the free site we stayed at for the night; Nelson lakes freedom camping DOC. It was a large grassed area with a long drop with forest surrounding and a fantastic view of the St Arnaud ranges right in front of us!! What more could you want from a free site?!
On the 21st we were up and off on our trek up Mount Robert (1421m) starting from Mt Robert car park on the Pinchgut track to the top and heading back down on Paddy's track. The morning started off really cloudy with some rain but the rain had stopped by the time we started the trek. It was cloudy on and off the whole walk but we still got some amazing views of lake Rotoiti, the St Arnaud ranges and some
views of the alps in the distance. The walk was 9.4km and suppose to take 5 hours return- we did it in 3 hours 15 mins, including stopping for lunch at the top for 45mins. We are getting pretty good at this tramping malarkey. The hike up was pretty steep and tough but it was good. After the hike we set off for Westport as we were done a lot earlier than expected so didn't need to stay another night.
