Ola Barcelona!! A free day to explore the city and... It's a frikin public holiday where all shops (except souvenir ones) are closed!! So disappointed! But Andie and I made do with eating delicious tapas all day! It was so much better than the one we had last night after the flamenco show. Absolutely amazing!
Then a visit to Park Guell, with the longest bench in the world! It was pretty cool, with street performers playing lovely classical music and great views of Barcelona city from the hilltop.
We then ventured once again to the bustling La Rambla with an array of market stalls selling jewellery and trinkets and got lost in the cobble stone streets just behind La Rambla, with great little stores and architecture. It was amazing! We found plazas and little squares where street performers were showing off their talent and skills (mostly playing instruments and classical music). Couldn't resist buying some lovely iberico jamon and chorizo with crustini for an arvo snack...delicious!! started talking to an old Spanish man, Estefan, and his Taiwanese wife and he told us the best places to eat in Barcelona, to be careful about our handbags, that he was Catalonian and taught about antimatter (the thing in the Da Vinci code). He was a lovely old man and took us on a stroll to "4 Cats", a historic Spanish restaurant where Picasso used to hang out and Picasso's friend's paintings hang on the wall. Then he showed us "Tapa Tapa", apparently a very nice tapas restaurant, which was literally on the opposite corner to our hostel!
However we decided to try a place called "Cal Lep" located at Place de les Ollies near the port, as it was rated the best tapas restaurant in Barcelona. Unfortunately for us it was closed today but we ate at the restaurant called "La nostra carta de tapas", which was pretty good ! (altho crap service). The neighborhood we were in seemed like one where the locals hang out, with a great mix of bars, restaurants and boutique shops (andie bought a pair of leather sandals). We found a great cocktail bar that made THE BEST mojitos I've ever had!! More than half the glass was spirits with lots of sugar. I had a mojito cava (a Spanish type of champagne that used to be stored in caves) and a frangelico, amaretto, vanilla vodka and angostura bitters and rose petal cocktail drink that was AMAZING too! The bartender was super friendly and even nearly forgot to take our money.
It was a very very fun and awesome night out with Anjuli, Andie, Sophie, Litta and Sam.
