Dallas - the beginning of our reintegration into polite society, this requires cash or more specifically a regular income stream before everyone figures out we are just freeloading. Unpleasant though it seems work will be necessary in NYC, sad but true. So on our return from Louisiana we had every intention of firing feelers out all NYC and letting employers know that the next big thing was about to hit town. You will have guessed by now from my phrasing that our surge in activity did not materialise and you will also have assumed that what progress we made was entirely down to Rachelle. Very astute of you, top marks. Here is what we did instead:-
Shopping - As you might imagine clothes you have been wearing for eight months get pretty nasty, covered in unidentifiable stains and bashed into shapelessness by laundry services. Once you start hanging around with real people instead of travelers and Mexican grandmothers on overnight buses you soon notice that it won't cut it anymore except gymwear at a pretty nasty gym. Luckily Dallas is completely covered in retail outlets with virtually no customers so now we can go out in public without fear of shame. (Special thanks go to Citibank in this section who gave Rachelle a $20,000 credit limit despite her confessing that she had no job or residence in her application for a card, nice one guys - what credit crisis?).
Relaxing - I think I am right in saying that sometimes it is tricky to focus on the task in hand when there are more attractive alternatives available. Unfortunately for our to do list Kathy & Ed's house is packed with attractive alternatives. After exercising in the morning we were confronted with a house with a) a pool table, b) a fully equipped kitchen, c) giant TV's with the European championship showing, d) a brand new bar and barbeque outside next to the pool, e) the pool and hot tub and f) jet skis - that's right jet skis. How were we expected to work under these conditions? It's inhumane and as it turns out completely impossible.
Family, Friends and Party Admin - Finally to sap any resolve we had remaining to do anything constructive we had family and friends to hang out with and abuse the facilities. Norma and George came down from Missouri in their new and even bigger RV (honestly it's absolutely massive, look at the pictures). Megan came up from Jacksonville for big R's 30th. Kathy and Ed were gracious hosts as always and Anne & her little boy Will came down from Minnesota. With so much to do and so many people to do it with many of which we hadn't seen for over a year the available time evaporated faster than the splashes from the pool. To further complicate matters we had to find time to plan a 30th bash, taking it in turns to distract Rachelle and run party related errands, nice work team.
So plan A wasn't a resounding success, I'm no closer to finding a job, Rachelle is still in the intial steps and NYC looks as daunting as ever looming two weeks ahead of us like a dentist appointment (no offence Ed). BUT our wardrobe has been revitalized, a party has been thrown and most importantly we have had a chance to hang out with Rachelle's family and reestablish our links. New York can wait, lets enjoy the last few weeks of our trip as much as the first eight months.
From an unworried A & R with lots of love from the US of A
