It is hard to believe that a few hours ago we were in Texas…and right now it is 10:30 p.m. here in Alaska (which is 1:30 a.m. texas time and would explain why I am so tired). It is true about the long daylight. It is still bright enough right now that we could read outside, and it is even overcast!
My closest friends (and a few others now that this trip has been pending) know of my aversion to flying. Sorry to disappoint you, but I did not turn into a babbling fool in any airport or go to fetal position in a plane today. I am not saying that I really enjoyed the flying, but it wasn't really that bad. When Brady played football in grade school, I remember he said that he loved all of it-except for the running and the hitting. I was that way today on the flights. I loved all of it except the take off and landing and the bumpy parts in between. I also wasn't crazy about sitting right behind the wing on the long flight, as watching it shake around wasn't that comforting to me. One more little uneasy minute came when it really looked like we were going to land in a GIANT mud puddle, but alas, the Anchorage airport is gorgeous.
I can appreciate the fact that I was across the continent in a few hours. But sitting still for 6 ½ hours is near torture to me. Fortunately, Russell suggested carrying the DVD player and Amy provided a couple of good movies. Then the plane actually showed a couple of good movies as well. My kindle was a kind friend in between. Sleep escaped me. By the way, as Eddie mentioned, there was a professional pilot sitting next to us today, and when it got what I thought was exceptionally "turbulent" I glanced his way to see if he looked nervous….that was a certain amount of comfort on what he called our "basically routine" flight.
Okay, as to Alaska, it is cold here this evening, the snow-capped mountains are beautiful, and Anchorage is a pretty large city. We look forward to looking around it some tomorrow. Our home for the week is not large, but probably just the perfect size for us.
Internet is not as abundant around here, I suspect, so actual "blogs" will not be posted but maybe at the end of the day or early mornings, but I will write and enter details when I can. We can both add to the site with our phones, and I realize that will make for probably an annoying amount of emails if you have been kind enough to subscribe, so rather than hate us at the end of this trip, just ignore the first half of them each day, okay?
At the end of this day, I am thankful for your prayers for safe travel, I am thankful for the skill of those flying the planes to make that travel safe, and the kindess of people we met along our way today. We talked to one couple in the airport in Dallas who were coming to Alaska to visit with a son who will be deployed to Afghanistan next week. I looked for them at the baggage claim to ask them to tell that soldier thank you for his service, and I couldn't find them. I regret I didn't tell them that when I had the opportunity. While we are enjoying the beauty of God's creation in an amazing place, I do realize that many travel to places not nearly as accommodating.
