Today, 29th March we headed South from where we're staying in Tahoe City. We drove along Hwy89, then 50, which take you alongside the lake. Amazing! Such beautiful views whichever way you look! Either side of the road snow was piled high where the snow ploughs had pushed it. In some places it was over 10 feet high! There were some lovely buildings, mostly wooden lodges hiding amongst the trees overlooking the lake. Many of them were obviously empty for the season as snow was piled up against the doors & windows & roofs were still covered in snow. Some seemed completely buried! Very picturesque! We drove past Hurricane Bay, Tahoma, Meeks Bay & stopped at Rubicon Bay for a while to admire the breathtaking views. Then we went on to Emerald Bay where we donned our boots & clambered over the snow covered rocks to look down on Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe's only island. What an incredibly beautiful spot! The few people around us were all exclaiming at the amazing view & we stopped to chat with a couple from Middlesborough, exchanging stories & advice regarding places we were visiting, before going on to a ski resort called Heavenly (yes, really!) We walked around the marina & stopped at the Artemis Lake Front cafe to have a very pleasant late lunch. After that we continued on along the rather narrow mountain road (sheer drops either side!) with me clinging in desperation to my seat & trying not to think about how far below us the lake was! Fortunately we survived our drive through this magical winter wonderland & that evening we took a stroll along the lake side & watched as the sun went down, casting beautiful shadows across the water.
