So the small delay in writing this next blog is mainly due to the fact that we've been on a remote ranch in Uruguay for a bit with no internet or contact with the outside world...bliss. I only have a limited amount of Internet and time, so I'm keeping it brief....
So after getting a boat across the water we spent a couple of lovely days in Colonia and Montevideo (the capital of Uruguay), looking round and eating nice food as usual. We went to a Chinese vegetarian buffet which was random but delicious.
We got a bus out of Montevideo up to the Uruguay hills to start our "estancia stay"- essentially, we stayed with a Uruguay family on a ranch. On the first day, after our welcome to the ranch and "house rules" (pretty much involving telling us that if we
Plugged in straighteners we'd blow up the ranch), we were taught how to tack up our horses "gaucho style" and went out for a short ride. Even Nicola managed this without any form of drama! The ranch is owned by a Uruguan vet called Jaun, who lives here with his Swiss wife and their two little daughters: they only have electricity for 4 hours a day and showers are heated by solar panels so as there are 16 of us in our group we can only shower for 3 minutes at a time. Still, it was a lovely little house and it was well heated with lovely log fires. They also managed to cook absolutely amazing food, and of course there was dulce de leche on tap for any potential hunger pangs.
On the second day, we went out to learn how to heard cattle using our newly-acquired riding skills- we also had to get off and herd them through the corrall so they could be vaccinated....an interesting experience, particularly when the ones with horns tried to make a break for it and ran at us, rather than the other way around.
So after a few absolutely lovely days chilling in the hills, we left Uruguay on a night bus headed for iguazu falls in Argentina...the bus has huge reclining seats, and dinner (including wine), so it could be worse.
See you in Brazil....
