After such a lovely day yesterday we had considered staying another day to see more of Honfleur, but this morning it is cold, windy and drizzling. The aire gradually empties out through the morning and when we leave [just before our 24 hour ticket expires] there are only about 30 vans left out of over 200 yesterday.
Our plan, on this our first properly miserable morning, was to follow the coast road along the D-Day beaches, but the rain and wind increase making the out-of-season seaside towns look bleak and deserted and driving conditions are not pleasant.
We pull into a layby for a hot lunch of soup and sausage sandwiches and decide to give up our tour and find a site. We find one in the ACSI list, but not trusting it Ali rings to check they are open and have wi-fi so Nick can use the afternoon to update the blog. The answer is yes to both. Our 30 minute drive to the site takes us over Pegasus Bridge, where the invasion on 6th June 1945 began, and past the excellent Pegasus Bridge Museum which we visited [in sunshine] in 2010.
We reach the site at L'Abbay de Manoir at Creully near Bayeux at 14:45 and park near two other vans in the pretty little orchard behind the manor house which dates back to the 14thC. We hook up the electric, get the heating on and turn on the computer. No wi-fi. Disappointed! Ali goes to enquire and learns it's only in a little seating area outside reception, as in outside outdoors and it's raining. If there is a French equivalent of 'economical with the truth' we could use it now. As there is no charge for it we cannot complain and it's not the end of the world, it just means the afternoon is a bit wasted. Never mind, we're warm and content, it's really peaceful and we have books, music and DVDs to occupy ourselves with.
In the evening, after hours of rain, we notice a drip in the skylight frame which means the temporary repair has finally given up. Nothing we can do except catch it in a cup and be careful where we put our wine glasses...
After dinner we watch some of Francesco da Mosta's 'Italy - Top to Toe' video featuring some of the places we visited [and others for another trip] reminding ourselves of warmer times a couple of weeks ago.
