Rose to an overcast day today. Marty spent an hour or so doing some checks on the nissan for any loose bolts or damage. So far the exhaust clamp has broken but apart from that all is holding up. The morning was spent lazing about while the kids all played together.
For lunch we cranked up the camp fire again for toasted cheese jaffals to use all the stail bread from Coen! After lunch our day turned into one of the best days so far on this cape adventure. We mingled with Angie and Rod and had a great chat. They've got their map of oz drawn on their bonnet of the landcruiser and Angie has marked all the places they've stopped with pictures of the things they've done (ie. Pic of volcanoes at Atherton). Really cool idea and looks great. Dale and Jeremy decided to walk out to the little rock island to have a fish, thought this wasn't the best idea seeing croc area. Then Angie stated that a local said to head out there and you can get some crabs. So Angie, Marty and l all started walking out to this bloody rock island. Marty took his knife and was walking out like Rambo, ready to kill anything that came near us. My heart was racing as the water got deeper, up to our waist. The water was clear and we were keeping our eyes peeled looking for dark shadows moving. We got to the rocks and started to climb up and thru them, l proceeded to cut my feet a few times on the rocks which have oyster shells on them, very sharp. Hopefully they dont get infected! Anyway we got out to this little rock island and Dale and Jeremy tried to cast out but was a bit rough. Angie started getting her bloody huge knife out and started collecting oysters. Angie gave me a try, after two chews l spat it out, too salty and fishy for me. Angie seemed to like them though. After a little while the water was starting to get a bit rough and l wasn't too comfortable out there, especially near the mangroves, so Marty, Jeremy and l started heading back. We got back into the waist high water and moved quickly until we were back at shore. Marty and l decided we wouldnt do that again anytime soon. Anyway we headed back to camp and Marty did sone first aid only feet with detol, hopefully keeps bugs at bay (should've worn shoes).
In the arvo Dale caught a sting ray but it fell of his line just before getting it in. Then not long after he and Angie caught a a gummy shark which Dale filleted on the beach. The sharks skin
is surprisingly rough, it's smooth one way and like sand paper the other.
Marty, the girls and l went up to chat to sone families a few camps up that we'd met at Musgrave. The girls were excited to see their friends again. We all headed back to camp as we'd heard Rod had got his paragliding stuff out and was going to have a crack at it on the beach. After half an hour he gave up as the winds weren't enough to get him up over the trees. Still everyone enjoyed watching him try, the girls loved it!
After all the activities we all went back to camp to prepare tea. We put our roast lamb on in the camp oven. By 6pm we had accomplished our first ever roast in the camp oven! It was heaven, juicy and cooked to perfection! Angie gave is a try of the shark she'd cooked, tasted good.
After everyone had tea, we all sat round the camp fire together and hung out. Angie and Rod had invited a German couple, Martin and Barbara, around for tea. It was interesting to hear how they liked Australia. Angie then served up dessert, sticky date pudding she had cooked in her camp oven. My first time ever having sticky date pudding, which Angie thought was very un-Australian of me! It was delicious, will be definatley be getting that recipe!!
We were all knackered and headed to bed by 9:30pm.
So the convoy is getting bigger with Angie and Rod, the 3 Musgrave couples, Dale and Kerry, Mick and us all going to head off tomorrow and tackle the Frenchmans track tomorrow. Someone asked me today what the highlight has been so far about this trip, was trying to think of destinations but instead all l could think of was the great people we have met. It's been so wonderful!!!
