I was hoping to write when we arrived in Cambodia but that didn't end up being until 2am!
We got a minibus from Bangkok to the Poi Pet border, which took about 5 hours but wasn't too bad. The people we travelled that bit with were pretty funny, which made it go a bit quicker!
We stopped at a restaurant where me and Shane were taken into lawn office and told to buy a visa there. I had read online that this would happen and would cost more, so we stood our ground and eventually were taken to another minibus and to the border. Here we were on foot, first through departures and then to buy our visa. It looks like they didn't read the form we filled out properly, so we may not be able to extend our visa for as long as we had hoped, but it should just be long enough for everything we want to do!
Then we went through arrivals and finally at 2pm we were told to wait somewhere for a bus. It wasn't long until we were put on a bus and got comfortable with the whole back row to ourselves. This lasted for about a 10 minute drive when we were told to get onto a different bus. Again we got settled in the back of the bus and got frustrated at the fact that it drove around in a circle for over an hour. Then they started loading loads of ginger root onto the bus, making us move to fit it in the back. After another loop it stopped again and loaded more random stuff on until finally at 4.30 it started moving. Even once we were moving it was slow and it was 9 and a half hours until we finally arrived at 2am.
We got a tuk tuk to the hostel we had booked and woke up the owner up to check in! Luckily he was really nice about it and showed us to our room where we both fell asleep.
Our first day in Phnom Penh started with some breakfast after we realised we had hardly eaten he day before. We had a chance to chat with the owner, who is British and really helpful showing us where to go in the city. We went out at 11 and walked miles! We saw lots of the different temples around the city, visited the national museum and the royal palace before walking back, very hot and tired!
We are now sat at the hostel debating food for tonight and whether to go to the night market. Tomorrow we have booked a tuk tuk to take us to the killing fields and S21, which I am looking forward to in a strange way as it is such a massive part of this countries culture.
