The day's objective was to find two churches that supposedly had timber-framed porches. We were successful at Tonge. The porch was timber-framed, circa C19, and in a poor state owing to the dampness of the area. Although there was very little evidence of deathwatch beetle, there was much staining from wetting and mold and fungus.
After a superb ride aver the North Kent marshes, passing through Conyer Creek and many orchards, we finally found Luddenham church at the end of a muddy road. This was the wrong church! It didn't have a timber-framed porch - in fact it had a substantial flint porch!
There was nothing else to do, but go for lunch in Oare. We had a superb and modestly priced lunch in the Castle Inn - we awarded the pub a gold-star for both food and hospitality. Thank you.
