Dear Nat, Jon, Jack and Henry
Thank you for buying us our first beachside accommodation. We have arrived back on Koh Phangan (sp) and settled in for a week here while we go to a few of the famous parties. We picked the Golden Bay Resort on the south of the island because it is near everything and it had good reviews on Booking.com.
First impressions were not so good. The taxi bus dumped us off by the side of the main road next to a small wooden sign advertising the place next to a shabby looking dirt road, with the rest of the bus laughing at us as they headed off to Haad Rin. Our luggage situation is not necessarily designed for dirt road travel. It tends to involve me with a 15kg backpack containing all my stuff on my back while dragging Donna's large 20kg wheely suitcase in one hand, her smaller carry on wheelie suitcase in the other and my man bag over my shoulder. Donna then has to cope with her two smaller backpacks.
Also did I mention that due to the universal laws of us travelling, while moving location, it was the hottest, sunniest day of our travels so far?
Things got so much better when we reached the guesthouse. A little bamboo structure, bar/restaurant type thing with hammocks, triangular Thai cushions, the obligatory Bob Marley playing and the friendliest owners we have met so far. They came and relieved us of our bags and showed us to our own little hut.
While it might not quite be Donna friendly being as it was down some further steps, it can at least definately class a beach front, the gentle waves are lapping but 10 metres away down on our little cute beach all to ourselves.
Our romantic sunset swim got interrupted by a slightly mad puppy. It took me half an hour to teach it the very simple rules to the game of throwing a stick (I throw it, you go and get it) but we got there in the end. I have since found out the puppy is called Tanya and her mum Natasha is also here.
The hut itself is a bit basic; Furniture consists of a bed and not much else, the bathroom has the enviable attraction of being able to use the shower while sitting on the toilet but then when you stand out on the balcony with a beer watching the lightning flash over the ocean. with the twinkling lights of Koh Samui in the background, all that doesn't matter and you can happily fall in love with the place
Lots of love
Donna and Jim
