Our final stop in Central America led us to Panama. Knowing we had to catch a flight from Panama City to Lima, Peru, on the 14th, there wasn't much time to see the country.
We caught a bus from Costa Rica, which took us over the border and through all of the normal formalities which always seem so incredibly disorganised in this part of the world. With passports stamped and exit taxes paid our bus took us onward to the small city of David by mid afternoon, where it would be up to us to find our way further. David had absolutely nothing of interest to us so it was a matter of waiting it out till our midnight bus onwards to Panama City, which got us there at about 6AM.
Panama City is clearly the most modernised city in the region, with western style skyscrapers, metro system and shopping malls a plenty. We found Panama City a bit tough going though. Perhaps a combination of the humidity wearing at us and our perception that anyone working in a shop we needed to interact with was quite unwelcoming to put it nicely.
A highlight included the Panama Canal, which was very interesting to see and understand how it works, its history and future.
With the feeling that Central America was "done" we made a morning trip out to the airport to catch our flight. One little bonus being we managed to work out the seemingly random bus system, with some help from the locals, and save ourselves a pricey cab. Seems as long as they're not working behind a shop counter the locals are pretty nice.
