The electricity may not work, the wifi will probably not work but you are guaranteed a trip to paradise by coming to Ilha Grande.
Monday 23rd November:
We arrived after a delay due to traffic at 3pm. To get here, it takes about 2 hours on bus to Angre dos Reis and about 45 minutes by boat to the island. We shared the bus with a bunch from Croatia.
We checked in at Biergarten hostel. A very nice hostel with a bar and pay by the kilo restaurant with great food at the entrance. About €15 a night.
There was a bunch of Irish staying there as well as Larry from Floripa. We had a few drinks and then headed to the islands only club, Aqua rio. It's a pretty cool club and it was pretty late by the time people got in!
Tuesday, 24th:
We got up and started the hike to the famous Lopez Mendez beach at about 11am.
Jamie couldn't keep pace and got lost. We arrived At the beach at just after 1pm taking it easy after getting over the mountain. Not a bad hike!
The beach is beautiful and we were lucky that we got a sunny day. It felt like a little slice of paradise!
At 6pm, we had booked a taxi boat back to Abrao for 25 per person. This took about 30 minutes and was a nice spin along the coast of the beautiful island.
We would venture to Aqua Rios again but myself and Ste left after half an hour as we were wrecked and there wasn't much going on. The electricity had gone on the island meaning the lights and music weren't working properly. A regular occurrence on Ilha grande.
Wednesday, 25th:
We had planned to change boats to leave this evening with the weather being rainy. This was not possible. The lads were tired after a few days hard at it and so we decided to get a boat to Lopez Mendez.
We ran into Steve Hartnett from Limerick, Jamie's old Liverpool house mate, and his girlfriend, Tara, who decided to come with us. Tara happened to be friends with Jane Bennett!
We haggled the taxi to 40 per person return which caused a few rows with the cartel. We had a guaranteed return journey of 7 people so felt like we had some bargaining power.
It was quite rainy but that didn't stop us having great fun at the beach.
We ended the night for one last time in Aqua rio. It was a good night and we danced away with some cool people including a Slovakian and a few English.
Thursday, 26th:
Time to leave. Easy Transfer picked us up at 10 on the dock with no delay.
I forgot to pack my swim shorts which I left on the drying rail. It would materialize that Ste had forgotten his passport too in the hostel but the English girls were able to bring this back for him the next day luckily enough.
