Luxor is where we based ourselves for the 2 week holiday which was good as there was lots to do in this town. We also stayed at a small hotel not on the Nile to save money which was good because we had a really good view of Luxor temple from our window.
One of the first things we did here was the Luxor temple which was really interesting as it had only been rediscovered in the 1800s and only fully excavated by 1960. It also has only one obelisk because the other was moved to Paris and is situated at the place de la Concorde.
Next we went to the karnak temple that is absolutely massive in size our guide also showed us how to write our names hieroglyphics!
Nearby is the valley of the kings which doesn't look impressive until you go inside one if the tombs because they are still covered in brightly coloured hieroglyphics. They were done with secrecy so that tomb robbers wouldn't find them and steal their treasures though they still managed to find most of them. Hence why Tutankhamen tomb was so famous because he still had everything in his tomb.
This did make digging difficult though because we went into one that had a big bend in it because grave diggers managed to accidentally did into someone else's because there were no plans of where people were buried. This is also why people are still excavating today in case they find another tomb. It was so hot that it was exhausting to go into the 3 you get included with the ticket price. If you want to go into Tutankhamen's tomb then you have to pay extra and our guide said it really wasn't worth it. In hindsight we probably should have gone in but o well.
Other things to do in and around Luxor that we saw was the colossi of memnon which are two massive seated figures that have sat there for over 3000 years. That is the best thing about Egypt just how amazingly Old everything is and that people even had the ability to construct these things such a long time ago. Another temple to see is the temple to hatshepsut that is not only pretty but also in 1997 Islamic extremists killed over 60 people.
Over our time in Luxor we did the usual sit by the pool and eat lots of food including McDonalds that had a double big Mac at the time that Dan loved! We also bought some papyrus but not that much stuff compared to our usual buying simply because the hassle here is three times worse than anyway else we have ever been to this day. It was exhausting going out and having everyone not just hassling you but never giving up. We had one guy follow us for over half an hour to try and sell us a boat ride. me and Dan used to tell them we were Finnish because most could speak about 6 languages and usually they would then give up because they couldn't talk to us. However one horse and cart rider even knew Finnish! So that was very awkward...
The final thing we did was ride a camel that was the best place we have ever done it for about a tenner each we got as little boat ride across the nile on a boat called the Titanic and then a Camel each for about two hours. Our guys let us guide them ourselves and I even got to run on mine which was jot at all comfortable but Dan couldn't with his (called Mr luvva luvva) because he was too old!
