Day 3 - Still in Bangkok
There was success and failure last night, success we found Martin and Sophie, failure we didn't find the insect stall (or is it the other way round). Well after all a few drinks to celebrate our reunion we headed back to the guesthouse for what I thought would be a nice relaxing sleep, however just as we were approaching the guesthouse Sophie decided it would be a good idea to pay 100 baht (£2.20) for half hour an hour of Thai torture………. Sorry I mean massage, after being jabbed in the neck and punched in the side for half an hour the guy finally decided to release me as some other poor person had showed up for the same treatment. So we then rushed back to the room looked the door and went to bed praying that the guy wouldn't find us and start punching again.
We got up early this morning to try and get to The Grand Palace which they refused us entry to twice yesterday, early being 08:30 (gosh its great not working anymore ). So we had our Ham and cheese Toasty for breakfast again and then headed off towards The Grand Palace. We came across the first temple we visited on the first day which was now fully open, apparently it was the Buddha's birthday……….again (lucky devil)! We then continued on our way towards The Grand Palace. After trying another 4 times to get in we finally worked out that we had to come back at 1:00. However we were still suspicious of this and had come to the conclusion that The Grand Palace may just be a giant poster and there may not actually be any brick buildings behind the main wall.
So we decided to head off to find a boat bus to take us to another area of Bangkok, Martin picked the area and we got on 2 very busy boats and finally arrived at our port…………in the middle of no where, cheers Martin lol. So we wondered aimlessly round the streets of our new found area of Bangkok until we finally decided to try and get a Tuk Tuk back to the Grand Palace and give getting in one last try. So we Bargained with the Tuk Tuk driver the cost and then all 4 of us climbed in and headed off, but not before grabbing 1 thing first…….. you guessed it Sarah a pot noodle, so your photo request was done in style, eating a pot noodle while 4 off us were being whizzed round in a Tuk Tuk crammed like sardines. So you are privileged to be the first name to be ticked off our photo request list.
After being sent away another 2 times from the Grand Palace we finally crept up to another gate and followed a big crowd, and finally success we were in…….. well to the outer ring at least, there was then a women with a big microphone shouting at people saying NO SHORTS, NO SLEEVELESS TOPS, NO SMOKING, etc etc, so Rachel, Martin and Sophie queued what seemed like an eternity to borrow some sweaty shirts, and trousers (the new Thai fashion!), it seemed like an eternity as I was stuck waiting out in the roasting sun, while they enjoyed the air conditioned room.
So we finally reached the inner circle paid for our tickets and I was in, HOORAY I nearly screamed, but then looked over my shoulder and so the other 3 hadn't come in, why not, what had happened, we were so close…….. do I run further in encase I get pulled back to? ………… Finally Martin and Sophie came through and explained that Rachel had been sent back to get a stylish yellow shirt as the scarf she was wearing over her shoulders was not good enough. Finally she arrived back and we were all inside.
We had a flying tour as it closed at 4:00 ish and we didn't get in till around 3:00. But it was well worth it and so some amazing golden buildings. We then left with great smiles on our faced having finally succeeded in getting in. We then headed back towards the guesthouse looking at Market stalls and stopping in a few air-conditioned shops on the way. We are now just having a quick freshen up before heading out again to find some food and fingers crossed we will be successful in finding the fried insects tonight.
