Day 6 - Angkor Wat (Cambodia)
Well we made it to the hotel yesterday and massive surprise, it was lovely, 2 double beds, shower, normal toilet, and free wii fi, perfect. It then went from good to better, we got taken to a local house and fed mmmm, about 4 different types of curry's, rice and noodles. In the traditional way outside and on the floor, (guess we weren't clean enough to enter the house, we have been travelling for a few days now so I cant blame them). After eating the delicious food the local children came round to learn English from us, there were a few that were talking in better English then me and they were only 12, and a few that went to the guys with modern phones and played on the games not speaking any English just having fun. Then there was me…… and the kid who could only really understand when I asked him his name, we spent half an hour trying to communicate and failing miserably, then the kid came up with a great game, screw up a bit of tissue and play with it between your hands then the other guess which hand it was in, we had hours of fun and yes you guessed right the 8 year old kid beat me every time. So I might have to take all my friends advice and get a modern phone with games on soon so next time I can just give him that.
We then explored the night markets and Rachel got a few bits while I walked round still thinking I could get stuff cheaper in Matalan. We then headed back for an early night as we were getting up at 4:30 the next day to see the Angkor Wat Temple at sunrise. So the alarms went of at 4:30 and we rushed round to get ready for 5, then a couple of minutes to 5 the phone went and we answered expecting them to say we were late………… I wish. Instead the voice came down the phone explaining that it was raining and we would not be able to see sunrise, so sadly we went back to bed and got up again to leave at 8.30 after having a breakfast.
We set off on our bus tour ride towards the temples and visited Ta Prom, which was famous in the Tomb Raider film. We then think we visited Ta Kev (they all sound the same just going by a picture) which had loads of steps to climb. Then a couple other nice temples that I'm sure you'll see in photos, and finally Angkor Wat - the biggest! And apparently is one of the 7 wonders of the world so we can tick one of the list! And wow is it impressive, well worth a visit. While we were leaving we also got a saw a monkey and got a picture of us both kissing it, so hope this pleases you monkey fans out there.
We then returned to the hotel to change and then headed out on the bus again to the river side where we got on a boat and went out on the Tonle Sap Lake - one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. On here there was a floating village where people actually live. Completely different world, there was kids swimming, people washing there cloths and dishes in it and yes 1 little boy relieving himself in it, needless to say when we went to the restaurant on it none of the group ate anything. The lake also apparently contains the largest source of fresh water crocodiles and they had a crocodile farm on one of the boats which was pretty cool. They also had a pig farm on another boat, amazing to see the whole community living together in this way.
After the floating village we headed back to the hotel for a half hour freshen up and then back out for dinner. There was a lovely restaurant with Cambodian music and dancers. Graeme liked the dancers so much he decided he wanted to get on the stage with them! After dinner and the dancing we walked around the streets for a bit and Graeme and Martin and a couple of others from our group decided to get a fish foot massage. Me and Sophie decided to play it safe and have a human foot massage. It was very relaxing until the woman doing my feet (and those of you who know my feet ewww may understand) she started pulling my toes around (Sez you would have loved it!) but she came to my big toes and I started giggling/squeemishing (if that's a word). Thing is she thought that ment I loved it and kept doing it more! Graeme and Martin then got a human foot massage too before we headed back to bed.
