Being hungover on a Bolivian bus that is driving the very dusty, bumpy and unsealed path from Uyuni to La Paz is not advisable. I had a sore arse from the bumps and couldn´t see or breathe from the dust. I also don´t think I was alone in thinking the bus was going to roll a couple of times as it veered off the uncomplete dirt road into dark, craterous fields to dodge roadworks. Having had very little sleep we made it back to La Paz and hoping to spend as little time there as possible to get a connecting bus to Copacabana, home of the lake of all lakes- Titticaca!! Luck was on our side and after only 10mins in La Paz we were able to squeeze on to a bus to Copacabana.
Lake Titticaca is enourmous and if it wasn´t at a very noticable altitude of 3800meters you could swear you were at the beach. This was coupled by a cruisy, hippy little waterside village with fantastic views from the torturous half an hour climb up a steep neighbouring cliff. Appart from having a severe lack of oxygen, climbing this mountain was actually quite cool in that there were local Cholitas walking and praying up the mountain at various monuments before meeting their friends at the top for a session of coca chewing and beer drinking. Inspired by the Cholitas festiveness we decided to stop half way down the mountain and buy a beer from a local stand, sharing the great views and grassy mountainside with a bunch of sheep.
We spent a few days here just recovering from Uyuni and trying to, rather breathlessly, do some activities. We got a slow boat (which was soooo slow it didn´t feel like it was moving) to Isla Del Sol (Sun Island) which was where the Incas thought the Sun was born...or where they communicate with the sun god or something along those lines. It was such a quaint little island dotted with donkeys, huts, quinoa and corn plants, cobbled paths and at the top of the island-Inca ruins. It felt a little bit like a Greek island minus the white and blue houses. You could do a two hour walk from one end of the Island to the other which I would normally jump at but neither me or Dan were feeling great so we got back on the- so slow its almost going backwards- boat. Copacabana was one of those little surprises, having not heard a great deal about it. It was relaxing, funky, had great trout and is an amazing vantage point for one big ass lake.- comments
