Nienburg to Brunswick 85 miles
Sunshine!!!!!!!!!
We'd started off in the wet, as usual. But by 10am it cleared up and the sun shone. We were able to swap our oilskins for Lycra. The wind had calmed down too and the day was a pleasant one for cycling.
Today we bashed out a good nine hours with very few breaks. The result was we made up the 20ml deficit. From Nienburg we headed east through the lovely town of Celle. We then headed SE. Somewhere along this route we decided not to go towards Wolfsburg, as planned yesterday, but to head for the city of Brunswick (Braunschweig). This is a slightly more southerly route which will bypass Magdeburg and will leave us with having to tackle the Hartz Mountains (Kelbra lies the other side of this range).
I had a pit stop at Celle. My chain was getting very worn and one of the links was becoming tight which caused it to catch and jump occasionally. So I stopped at a bike shop and changed the chain and rear gear cassette. Much better.
The evening meal in Brunswick was very nice. Salad followed by Argentinian steak and baked potato. Not knowing the lingo, we find some of the menus difficult to read. I fancied a dessert but couldn't decipher the words. So I ordered the most ridiculous sounding sweet. It was called a Zwetchgenknödel. (The 'k' is pronounced hard and the ö as ooo.) It was actually quite nice: a plum filled steamed yeast dumpling with a slightly tart taste and a caramelised apple sauce. All dusted with icing sugar.
Interestingly,we noticed that Brunswick is twinned with Bath. So we'll be taking in two twin to twin cycles. What's the chances of that?
