Sleeping on a plane.....not really happening. Maybe I could catch up on the blog.....not really happening!! Too awake to sleep, to asleep to think so we watched movies, dozed and simply waited for the plane to land.
Once in Venice, we wander out to the water bus and spend the next hour jostling to hold our position in a cramped, sweaty, wobbling, enclosed platform waiting for a ferry. Looking at the one parked next to us and wondering why the b*****y it won't let anyone on! When it finally does, we still miss out!! Damn, but we are somewhere near the gate so the next one is ours. The system is non existent here, it is simply a case of who can manoeuvre their cases the best to block others out...lol. We decided to use the water bus because it stops quite near our hotel and we read that approaching Venice via the water is amazing and I'm sure it is if you happen to get a water bus which you can see out of. Ours had quite high windows which I stretched up to get a glimpse out of a few times but really couldn't see much.
We disembark and head over our first Venetian bridge to find our hotel. First impressions...wow!! This is not like anything we have seen before. I think it was well summed up when Talari looked at us and just said, "Now this place looks cool!". She said it looked like somewhere you could really explore so we drop our bags off, grab a map and do exactly that.
It is quite interesting walking around Venice with a map when you quickly discover that all the paths aren't actually on there, only the bigger ones are. Not that it matters, the Grand Canal is very obvious so general direction is fairly easy to figure out. As we are now in our first non-English speaking country, I am a bit nervous about general interactions, ordering meals, making purchases, getting directions but I soon figure out that the folks here are used to tourists and English is understood well enough by most. The number of visitors here is amazing, people are everywhere. Luckily, pathways are everywhere too so you can explore easily enough without having to constantly jostle among the crowd. Another obvious difference for us is the amount of dogs around. Sienna and Talari begin counting as we walk. I'm not sure if they like Venice or just the dogs...lol.
We spot gondolas, more bridges, amazing hidden passageways, masks galore and incredible architecture. Everywhere you look there is an amazing building, statue, tower, fountain or structure to look at. We have our first gelato and make a pact to have at least 2 every day. With pizza, pasta and gelato on the menu for the next 2 weeks Talari is in food heaven. We get to bed early ready to really explore tomorrow...
