First day of class was today! We got up early to get breakfast and then headed to our lecture. It was just an introduction to the program and we got some good ideas of things to do with our spare time and how to handle class. After that we went to lunch and then to our separate French classes. I learned I have the worst French pronunciation ever but hopefully that changes with more practice. My teacher is awesome and he makes the class fun so we all just laughed at each other which helps a lot when learning to grunt and cough r's like the French hah. We learned the obvious Je m'apelle Erin (my name is Erin) and also how to use je suis which means I am. So we practiced saying back and forth to each other all the different phrases you can use with je suis. Such as; Je suis American (I am American), Je suis célibataire (I am single), and Je suis etudiante a business (I am a business student). We also learned to say where we live, j'habite en Virginnie. After class was over, the interns took a big group of us on a tour around Paris. We saw Bastille, the amphitheatre, and the best view of the Eiffel Tower so far. We had all gone into Paris to watch the France v. Sweden soccer game, which they project on a big screen in front of the Eiffel tower. This place takes "futbol" very seriously. People were chanting and running around with their faces painted and in French flags. It would have been really fun to see but it started pouring down rain so Tori, Decker, and I went to get dinner and head home. Which was probably a good idea because apparently there was a riot during the game. On the way home the metro stopped and kicked us off way before our stop at La Bras de Fer. We were super confused but luckily, for the first time, someone saw us desperately searching the map and told us the metro was under construction and there was a bus to take. On the way to the bus we found some other summer school students who were lost/confused like us. They were 2 girls from Barbados, Khiery and Danielle, and we had a good time swapping stories and telling each other about our lives back home. It's so interesting to learn all the different popular phrases we have in our cultures. For example in Barbados they say "he sucks lime" if someone is sour or being rude. They also say "cheese on bread" whereas we would say "oh crap" or something like that. So it was another good day with another metro scandal but I think we're learning to accept that hah.
