Off exploring!
Ponte Vecchio bridge - about 3 mins from our house. First bridge to be built over the Arne River. Little houses on bridge that was once fishmongers. Now famous for gold and silver jewellery.
Climbed up a hill overlooking Florence to the 'Bascilica of San Miniato al Monte'. Spectacular views over Florence. You can see how Florence is nestled in a valley with the river running through it.
There is also a cemetery ' Cimitero Monumental dele Porte Sante ' here with some famous Italian's are buried including:
Carlo Lorenzini (Pinocchio author)
Giovani Papini (Author)
Vasco Pratolini (Poet, short story writer)
Pietro Annihoni (fresco artist)
Giovani Spadolini (Prime Minister of Italy)
Late afternoon when went to the Museum di Palazzo Vecchio.
This was the home of Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici (27 September 1389 – 1 August 1464). He was the first of the Medici political dynasty, de facto rulers of Florence during much of the Italian Renaissance in the 1300's.
Grand building with frescos and ceiling paintings telling stories of battles and life of these times. This was the Grand Duke's home and we toured through each of the rooms he had built for his family. Climbed the tower - great view from the top.
Finished day with Rick cooking us a lovely pasta dinner and then wandered the streets until nearly midnight. Lots of musicians - cafés / bars open. Boys had chocolate gelato crepes before we headed back to apartment for bed.
Fantastic day!
