Sorry, once again the photos don´t match the blog. Having trouble getting photos directly from the camera.
Anyway, we have moved from Dubrovnik to Split to Zagreb, and are off to Ljubljana tomorrow! Can´t keep up with ourselves.
The journey from Dub. to Split was so beautiful, with the bus hugging the coast all the way for 4 and a half hours. We were so lucky to just get the last 2 seats on the 11 o´clock bus, too! Unfortunately our seats were on the wrong side of the bus, and our window was filthy, but still we got a good impression..... If anyone is interested in sailing, then this coast with all the islands covered in lush green vegetation is so beautiful.
Split is an interesting place too, with the old Roman palace of Dyocletian still to be seen. We had a short stay over, and thoroughly enjoyed the tour we made of the town, followed by a climb up a hill from where we watched the sun setting over the town as we drank a glass of white wine at a café at the top. Bliss!
We then got back on the train!!! M not at all to leave bus travel behind, but he didn´t bargain on the split new (no pun intended) train which was to take us the 5 and a half hour journey to Zagreb. After a time I mentioned to him that it was a tilting train! So modern! But that just made him feel sick and he spent the journey with his eyes closed!! The scenery was fantastic. Being brand new, the windows had no furring or fuzzing as the bus, and previous trains. We travelled from the coast right high up into mountains, sometimes with only rock to be seen as a wall at the window and then at other times meadows filled with flowers of all colours. Dotted here and there were villages, or just farm houses, looking as if time had missed them. And when the train stopped at little villages it was hard for us to know if the houses which looked ruined were merely very old houses, or if this was the effects of the war. It was so real in this region, and quite hard for us to believe it.
Anyway, a memorable train journey ended in an equally memorable exit from the very nice station in Zagreb. Forget anything you may think of as standard railway station surroundings, we were confronted with the most beautiful open, wide space going on for 500 yards or so of gardens surrounded by beautiful buildings, and on the horizon, the two towers of the cathedral and mountains in the background. We have been so taken with this city, and I´ll explain further another time.....
