We left our hotel after breakfast on our way to our next destination at The Hopi Cultural Centre. It was another stunning journey travelling through rocky mountains, farmland small towns. Some snowy areas again. We stopped at a small town for coffee, the wind got up and dust was blowing everywhere! We travelled on in the mountains and it got more and more remote. We finally got to Hopi territory we passed a modern school but most of the other properties looked very poor and ramshackle. We stopped and asked an Indian lady for directions and our destination was just a little further up the road. We finally arrived the centre was a terracotta building looking a bit Mexican built in a sort of compound design with separate little cabins. The reception and dining area were nice as were the staff. Our rooms were not ready so we went back to the car and eat our picnic. There were two Indian ladies selling colourful blankets in the car park and three dogs wandering around. Claire fed the dogs with some bread that we had left over. We picked up our keys and found our rooms which were fine. The wind was really blowing now and it was quite cold. We all met up later for dinner in the centre. Alan had read up on a farmhouse lamb stew that is a traditional dish of the Hopi. So four of us ordered that and Nick had chicken wings in a sauce with chips. Nick's dinner arrived and looked good. The stew arrived and looked like dishwasher soup with white beans, green chilli and if you looked hard tiny bits of lamb. It came with blue bread! We had our first taste it was horrible I tried seasoning it with salt and pepper made no difference so added some Tabasco sauce still not nice! The Blue bread was ok but a bit greasy it had been fried. I just could not eat it not could Claire. John and Alan bravely eat theirs up but didn't like it. Nick enjoyed his and was so pleased he hadn't ordered the stew. We ordered desert to take the taste away. Blueberry pie with ice cream. The blueberries were out of a tin okish and the pastry was okish. Didn't manage to eat the crust though. We apologised to our nice waiter who was very nice about it all. Felt sorry for Alan as he had been looking forward to the stew for months. We all had a good laugh about it afterwards and went to bed with rumbly tummies.
