Yay! It's finally Easter, and as a North American I expect the season to be filled with blooming flowers, colourful easter eggs and spring cleaning. Being in Australia I get to experience autumn Easter. Where the Easter bunny, cute chicks and pink daisies can be accompanied by falling leaves, wool jackets and gloomy weather. Melbourne does it all by warping the best of both world into one glorious season. Since Aussies don't celebrate thanksgiving, they do it up right by having extended Easter holidays. Starting with Good Friday leading into Easter Monday followed by ANZAC day, which is a veterans memorial day. (Not to be confused with a day of delicious biscuits). Not to worry, November 11th is taken into account as well. With this gathered information, I'm getting the vibe, that everyone likes a good public holiday. Celebrating a labour day in March the Queen's Birthday in June and Invasion Day on January 26th. Yes, invasion day. Also known by some as 'Australia Day', but I prefer a title that's straight to the point. A day in celebration of white Australia taking over Aboriginal soil. No worries right?
The real kicker is "Melbourne Cup Day" a day soley devoted to cheer on your favourite jockey, dressed in 19th century apparel. Did I mention the state of Victoria, claims this a no work day? So everyone must be tuned into the Flemington races by 11am in order to properly participate in this day of relaxation. Who could complain? I'm willing to embrace change!
Being on my exchange, I cherish every day like a mini holiday, but this weekend it's time for a break.
I'm off to Perth to take a vacation from my vacation.
It's about time!
