Sunday morning started with an early drive out to Sierpe. We grabbed some breakfast while we chartered a boat for the day. Without even leaving the dock, there was a crocodile swimming in sight. There was definitely an adventure ahead of us.
We all boarded the boat and rode out from the river to the ocean. At the river mouth, we were all told to put on our life vests and so I put my phone away. Just as we were at the last leg of the river mouth we hit two large waves. The captain handled the first wave like a champ. However, the motor must have lifted out of the water enough to hit the cut off to the power so when the larger 20 foot wave came to the boat, it broadsided us and almost capsized the boat. Luckily no one was thrown overboard. We lost a few pairs of glasses and several cameras were water logged but all in all very few bumps and bruises. After the initial shock of being thrown, we continued out in the water and circled the National Park.
On the way to the beach where we were going to snorkle, we saw a couple small pilot whales. Several boats circled this location following the whales hoping to see more whales and dolphines. The pilot whales were so small we thought they were dolphines.
Once we got to the beach, the guide laid out some fresh fruit and sandwiches. The group could snorkle along the shoreline and lay by the beach. When snorkling, you were very close to the fish and coral. In some spaces, you wouldn't be able to tread water without touching the coral. There were all sorts of fish hanging about the shallow ends of the water. There were angel fish, puffer fish, blue Dori's, and many more.
After spending the afternoon at the beach, we headed back to the river. The river tour occured on our way back. We went through the mangrove forrest. There were many different species of mangroves, all with an important role to play in the habitat. Some mangroves have a direct and indirect role in maintaining the fish stock. The lifecycle and environment help different animals reproduce, feed, and grow. On the way back to the lauch point, we saw lots of different white face monkeys, birds, and crocodiles. The only thing we didn't see all trip were sloths.
We got back to the tour place and drove back towards Dominical. We stopped in for dinner at a restaurant in Uvita. This restaurant was a restaurant, club, and karaoke bar all in one. There was a deaf mute artist that came by our table offering to make items made out of palm tree leaves. The artist could make just over 30 different shapes and animals. We got an iguana and he was adorable. We headed back to the house after dinner to hang around the pool and played games like every night.
