What a day of contrasts today has been, especially in terms of the weather.
Woke up to rain pattering on the caravan and it steadily got worse. We packed up and left early before breakfast - guess with our caravan we can eat anywhere. We stopped a little further north in a road side rest area for brekky. We then drove through Paynes Find, stopping only for fuel and a quick toilet stop in the pouring rain, before driving on to the larger town of Mount Magnet. Here we drove up to see the view of the mines and surrounding landscape at the lookout at the top of Mount Magnet and eat lunch.
We drove all afternoon, listening to an audio book and watching the changing landscape. We are definitely out of the wheat belt and in the mid west of WA now, with red clay earth and low lying bushes clumped together. We didn't really see any wildlife other than a couple of herds of wild goats, some eagles and several dead roos and a dead camel on the side of the road.
As the afternoon wore on the weather improved, until by 5pm when we reached Meekatharra it was a balmy 26 degrees. Such a change from this morning! We refilled fuel (third time today), made a quick dash to the supermarket for some (expensive) bread and ice cream, and drove to our chosen campsite for tonight, the nearby Meekatharra Rocks. We arrived in the nick of time to see the sun sink low on the horizon, glowing red and orange on the rock formations and, with the light fading across the vast red plain, it felt like we were the only ones for miles around (except for the occasional road train still passing by). What a gorgeous sunset we were privileged to witness...yet again!
Made a BBQ dinner on the weber and enjoyed a cold cider as I watched the last rays of sun turn pink and red in the sky.
A lovely end to a long day's driving up the middle of WA.
Time to head inside, so sweet dreams xx
