We both slept in this morning and then packed up to head into the nearby town of Iron k*** to check out the iron ore mine. This town is known as the birthplace of steel in this country, with BHP setting up the mine to take advantage of the high quality lead it was producing (over 60% pure) and it became known for producing the highest grade iron ore in the world.
We explored the museum and watched a video about the town's history and the closure of the Iron k*** and Iron Monarch mines in 1999, and the subsequent reopening of the Iron Monarch and new mine sites by One Steel (Arium), staffed mainly by FIFO workers.
We then went on a private tour of the town and the mine and gained tremendous insight into life during the mining boom and what it is like living in this (almost) ghost town today.
After our tour we headed off for Port Augusta, where we stopped to eat a late lunch of fish and chips before heading to a quiet caravan park in Stirling North, just out of town. We did a couple of loads of washing before Gadi headed into town to his podiatrist appointment and to do some supermarket shopping.
We ate dinner when he got back and then it was time for Monday night ABC TV - and a bit of olympics.
Night night xx
