What a night we had last night! We slept on a cliff at the edge of a huge sand dune that was totally exposed to the elements. And boy, did we feel those 'elements'. The wind howled and screeched all night, rattling and shaking the caravan, especially our canvas bed ends. It felt like we were going to be lifted in the air, like the house in The Wizard of Oz. I hardly slept at all, tossing and turning and finally giving in and updating all my iPhone apps and uploading maps on my iPad as from midnight to midnight we have free data (yay, thank you Boost and Telstra).
Woke up groggy and glad of an extra hour's sleep now that daylight saving is finished.
Spent the (still highly windy) morning uploading photos from our phones and camera to the laptop and Google photos. After breakfast we packed up and farewelled our windswept cliff top dunes and headed slowly south along the coast road.
First stop was the sleepy seaside town of Arno Bay, where we had a look around town and checked out the lookouts, marina and beach, as well as the lovely mangrove board walk that followed the inlet out to sea. We ate lunch at the Jetty Cafe, where we feasted on the local burger legend called the Arnormous burger. Suffice to say one was more than enough for two people to share!
We took the gravel beach road along the coast, checking out a number of remote free camp spots until we happened to find the magic spot we are now camped at. This is the gorgeous Second Creek, Tumby Bay, a lovely little inlet with sandy beaches and lots of bird life. It is popular with local fishermen, but as the sun set we found we had the place to ourselves. We enjoyed an absolutely stunning sunset in this magic place, really feeling how lucky we were to have found this place by chance. Best of all, the inlet is protected and there is only a light breeze.
As the sun set I put a homemade chocolate cake (laced with a shot of coffee and splash of cognac) into the weber to bake, ready for a special occasion tomorrow.
Now it's dark outside and we are cosied up inside our little home.
It's hard to believe we've been on the road heading west for four weeks now. Being away from home means evenings are relaxed, days are relaxed and the biggest decisions are where to camp next, what delicious meal can we whip up on our weber q and what movie/TV series on our hard drive should we watch.
Decisions, decisions...
Night night xx
