Perth
Well our final day in Australia has arrived and it all seems to have gone by far too quickly. While it is eight weeks tomorrow since we flew from Sydney to start our adventure after a few days in Sydney, it feels only yesterday but at the same time an awfully long time ago with sensory overload from what we have seen and done.
Still we have one day left to explore Perth. Having checked out of our hotel and left our suitcases with them we set off for a final look at what remains to be seen. Our first stop was the area around the library and museum of Western Australia. In the public space in front of them an international student event was going one and we spent some time watching the activities, in particular, a mainly Chinese group of performers doing a Traditional Lion dance accompanied by musicians; really very good.
Back into the main CBD we went to look around further before hopping on one of the free tourist buses that take you on various circuits around the city. We chose the red route which took us out to west Perth initially with only Perth railway station as a principle point of interest but good to see some of this outer area. On the second part we went east past St Mary's cathedral and on to the WACA before returning back to our starting point via the Perth Mint and original town hall.
After lunch we headed for Kings Park, again on a free shuttle bus, to enjoy the view over Perth and the Swan River. Having been told by various people that the view was worthwhile it certainly proved to be. From round the State War Memorial the views were amazing over the city and river as far as the Darling Ranges. We then followed the path to pick up the tree top walk we had seen from the river cruise. Other than an elevated bridge link this was a bit disappointing and short. The park itself was quite impressive but not quite Kew Gardens as the information office guide implied. It is obviously very popular with the locals, many picnicking and even one wedding and three wedding receptions going on. The only criticism is that there was no ice cream outlet, an ice cream being needed after several hours walking around the park.
There is not much to do in Perth once dark except eat or drink and having done that at lunch time we had little else to do but collect our suitcases and head for the airport. Unfortunately, check in was not open when we got there so it was a case of just sitting and waiting. Once it was open and we had checked in we enjoyed the business lounge and relaxed before the flight.
So farewell Australia and hopefully we will back some day to see what we missed this time. It's been a great trip!
