After spending a week in Huanchaco at a lovely hotel for Angie’s Birthday we then headed to Mindo in Ecuador where we stayed at Angie’s friend Laura’s house. Laura had moved out to Ecuador from Leeds about 2 years ago and her and her husband built their own house in the Jungle. We spent two weeks relaxing and helping out at the animal rescue that she works at with one particular monkey, who was in heat, going crazy for Antonio. From here we headed to Colombia and after a mammoth 34 hour bus journey we arrived in the capital, Bogota.
After struggling to find a (decent) place in our budget (it is one expensive city!), we found somewhere grabbed some food quickly and tried to catch up on some sleep. Over the weekend we explored the city and visited a number of landmarks and museums. We visited the military museum and then the police museum which had loads of weapons as well as lots on Pablo Escobar which was really interesting. We also visited Museo Del Oro (The Gold Museum) which showed the uses of gold since the start of man. One of the really interesting parts was a circular room which was pitch black before lights came on in different colours and sequences to show all the gold in the walls. We also discovered an amazing gourmet burger place that was incredible, Angie was in heaven. We left Bogota and headed to Santa Marta in the North on the Caribbean Coast a 25 hour bus journey, however after some of the stupidly long bus journeys we have had recently we could not face another one and decided to get a domestic flight.
