From Penh to Pot
Back on the Giant Ibis bus at 14:45 for our 2.5 hour journey to Kampot, Southern Cambodia. The first hour was spent getting through traffic in Phnom Penn (still minor compared to Manila), and then waiting to have some air put in the tyres - how exciting! The journey took a lot longer than we thought because of this, but the roads were much better and not full of the dust that I had written about on the way into PP.
The journey ended in similar fashion though, with Tuk-Tuk drivers hopping on and grabbing luggage, tapping on the windows to try and get you to say yes to a ride and also asking before you got out the door. A mini Asian Circus!
Our hotel was a 10 minute Tuk-Tuk journey away, and if we thought the journey into Siem Reap was quiet then this town was practically asleep as we rode through it!
Its the first time walking seemed practical, so we got out on foot to look for dinner, along a pavement next to the riverside. A few places had been recommended to us by our hotel. First impressions seemed that there was a big Western influence in this small town, not so much Khmer food along the riverfront.
I spotted a coffee seller, who strangely only had beans from Vietnam or Laos. I did wonder if this meant they were roasted locally but there was no way our conversation would extend to those depths. I got 500g of Vietnamese Beans for $4. I reckon thats double the cost I paid last year.
Dinner was at a Tapas place, we had a middle eastern platter, full of those Khmer classics; hummus & olive tapenade. I had two Cambodian Beers though so surely thats ok? (Found out this is the only "local" beer thats still locally owned). Also I had stir-fried ginger with chicken for lunch earlier in the day, as you would guess the ginger here has so much more kick and warmth to it.
