Travelling from Trondheim to Heidal today has been incredible.
As we left Trondheim I realised that the houses in and around this area reminded me of what I think of as Southern American houses, with wooden facades, verandas and balconies; but if immigrants from Norway went America it would make sense for them to build house in the tradition of those from home.
We have journeyed through the largest farming areas so far, through forests of pine trees, what looks like open tundra complete with lichen, moss and warnings to watch out for musk oxen! We have followed crystal clear rivers as they changed from wide flat flowing into fast tumbling rivulets over rocks and boulders.
We took a slight detour to a viewpoint which was the site of the military training grounds, the scenery was amazing; although there were signs advising you not to pick up any ammunition you might find lying around, as it could still be live!
Our lunch stop was the second best, a hairy roofed cafe complete with wooden troll!
Colin had thought that this return journey to Oslo would be just a slog along the main road, but he has been so pleased to still have the wow views around each corner. I think he would prefer a faster speed limit in some places as the road is just perfect and for the majority of time and empty as well!
We keep stumbling across tiny ski areas complete with a ski jump in places.
We have been travelling for 6 hours now and we are still going downhill (a bit like me!). We have plateaued in places where glaciers have scored a valley between the mountains and we have seen snow lying on the hills for the whole duration.
Colin is now talking about getting a four wheeled something or other complete with winter tyres, snow chains and a ski rack for his touring skis so he can come back here in the winter and roam and ski to his hearts' content! We'll have to see whether he has managed to get an apartment in Morzine again, if not then he might be having a very different winter season next year!
