Our east coast tour has been a dream in my heart for a long time. We are finally here and it is proving to be a dream come true! Our 12 night tour of the Maritimes begins in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia near the quaint town of Wolfville. It is about an hour from Halifax and is an idyllic little university town with a funky high street a few blocks long and surrounding it beautiful characteristic homes and gardens. Farm markets here are hopping with people snapping up the local produce which we enjoyed with our steak and lobster tonight. The area is known for its agriculture and the Acadians farmed here before being deported by the British in the 1700's. But these days vineyards have taken over where other crops were planted and the region has several wineries nearby. It has made our drive thru the area very scenic and our dinner very tasty!
Today's visit to Grand Pre, a new Unesco World Heritage site was helpful in understanding the plight of the Acadian people, french settlers who worked the land and creatively used marsh land here where the tides from the bay of fundy are the biggest in the world. Fifty families settled and soon multiplied to ten thousand people, all deported by the British and their homes were destroyed by fires so that they could not return. Many were never to return after being sent to the south of America, in such places as Louisiana. But eventually the resilient people reclaimed a part of their history here and their land. There is a special relationship with the Mi'kmaq people here as both groups shared in the discrimination experience. This colonial story is another piece of history I am cringing at, but am thankful to be a witness to it while we visit.
Our drive thru the countryside lead us to a few local wineries to taste the fruits of the valley and to a lobster pound on the bay of fundy. Chris chose his dinner and almost got his hand snapped off! He is a happy man with his first of many lobster suppers!
While we stay at a family farmhouse here over the next few days we intend on visiting Halifax, Lunenburg and Peggy's cove.
