Perth - Saturday the 26th of Dec
When I arrived in Perth at 8:00 pm I hadn't booked any accommodation for the following days to come since my credit card information had been stolen and used just before Christmas setting me back 1400 AUD. And mostly when booking online the booking sites demand a credit card number to hold your reservation and I didn't have a valid credit card number to give.
The father of the family that I stayed with in Darwin (Richard) was as kind as to lend me 100 AUD so that I could pay for the first few nights in Perth until setting up a travel credit card with an Australian Bank or post office. But it being a holiday time of year - the 26th, 27th and 28th of December I wasn't able to get a credit card before the 29th of December with help from my sweet friend Amy who lives in Mosman Park in Perth.
(I met Amy 4 years ago in Sydney when long-term backpacking for the first time. I wrote her on Facebook before coming to Australia if she wanted to meet up in Pert at some point and she told me just to text when I had arrived and then we could find a day to catch up).
East Perth -
The first 3 nights in Perth I stayed at a hostel in East Perth called 'Exclusive Backpackers' in a small 3 bed dorm room with no air-con and only floor fans - it was sizzling hot during the day and warm at night. But it was close to the airport bus route/stop on the way to the city centre and had vacancy when I booked it last minute already sitting on the bus, and it was in a nice area without any noise at night :-)
It was an old building with lots of charm, as you would say, and the facilities included; a huge lounge room with a big TV, an ok sized kitchen with clean refrigerators (not always clean in hostels), a balcony overlooking the streets, shared bathrooms and toilets, internet facilities and laundry room.
It was a lovely old building and the owner was very kind and informative but it would be appreciated with some upgrades of the rooms.
Sunday the 27th of Dec -
I walked around the area of East Perth trying to find a post office with opening hours during the holidays to help me set up a travel credit card but no such luck (some are usually open on Sundays).
The hostel was only a few 100 meters away from the Swan River so I did a walk to the water front and rented a bike and biked around the Swan River which was a really nice experience.
