Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day is held on the last Monday in May to remember the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. Nowadays Memorial Day honors all Americans who have lost their lives in the line of duty in all wars.
Sarah and I spent the long weekend with Leslie and Grant at their lakeside chalet in Lake Tahoe - about 3 hours north-east of San Fran past Sacramento. It's the end of the ski season and the mountains have dried up enough for some great mountain biking.
We hit the trails on Sunday morning, heading to the back, side of Tahoe City for a 13-mile (21 km) cross country orientation ride. Lake Tahoe is ~6,250 feet (1,900 metres) above sea level which makes riding up the mountains just a bit more challenging. All up we climbed to ~9,000 feet before enjoying a fast, freeflowing downhill ride back to where it all began.
Grant and Leslie are both very fit and technically proficient riders compared to Sarah and I. Grant was kind enough to provide some tips and techniques to help me get the most of my downhill experience. He led the way down the trail and offered advice along the way. He took some video footage of the downhill which I hope to share in the next few days - including my airborne adventures! The last stack was my most memorable because I could hear a woman riding up the trail say to her friend while I was mid-flight "that's gunna hurt!"
