Bastille Day today! We left at 10:30 to go to explore this Luberon region, very famous for its lavender fields which are in bloom from July to August. We got maps of the area, marking out the lavender route we were going to take.
The first stop: Rustrel -- a town famous for its ochre colored caves. Not much to see though. Views over the ochre coloured rocks were pretty awesome.
Second stop: Sault. This is one of the main towns as a base to explore the lavender region in this part of France. OMFG. The views over the valley were just coloured green (the grass and trees), beige (the paddocks) and purple (the lavender fields). It was crazily beautiful!! Sooooooo nice!! I'm definitely returning here one day with Will! So romantic...but I'm only here now with my best mate ... :) - which is also really good too.
We made plenty of stops today to take photos amongst the lavender fields and to visit some lavender distilleries. We went on a quick tour of a lavender distillery where we saw the process of how the lavender essential oil is extracted.
Visited Ferrerserias for another lavender distillery, another town close to Sault, and also Simione la Rotonde, which had a mini castle built and owned by some upper class family a few centuries back. There were some interesting contemporary sculptures (also for sale) in the cathedral within the castle and a lecture on the extraction of various essential oils. I found it a little commercial to be honest!
Actually surprising we had not much trouble at all navigating between places as we asked tourist info places and followed all the road signs for the different towns. Driving along the country roads (some quite windy and narrow) was very relaxing and fun!! A fantastic way to enjoy the lavender blooming season!!
We headed back to our hotel Auberge le Luberon for dinner. It was a 3 course menu for €30.. I had the scallop carpaccio (SUPERB!), duck breast (a bit too heavy, but cooked very nicely) and the melon 'soup'..very refreshing! all this accompanied by 2 pichets of rosés of the Luberon region...awesome dinner!!
We then headed to the main town square, which was buzzing with lots of people for the the fireworks display at 10pm.
Had such an awesome and fun-filled day in the lavender region!
