Spent the past weekend in Dublin taking a beautiful scenic coach ride South and seeing first hand hundreds of years of Irish history.
Left Friday night from Derry and met Barry at the Airport and headed into Temple Bar for something to eat. Temple Bar is in the centre of Dublin and is full of buskers, entertainers and restaurants with beautiful historic fronts. You could definitely spend hours here being entertained by the natural life of the city and all of its characters. After dinner we walked up to Grafton Street which boasts the title as 7th most expensive street in the world.
Bought a pass for the "Hop on, Hop off" double-decker on Saturday and saw all the must sees in Dublin. Dublin was the scene of some of the most severe fighting of the Irish rebellion of 1916 and of the revolution of 1919 to 1921, which resulted in the establishment of the Irish Free State so there were numerous spots along the way that showed its history through bullet holes and monuments.
One of the most impressive tours I took was of Kilmainham Gaol. Built in 1796 this jail has an amazing history reflective of executions, hangings, leaders of the Irish rebellion and the Great Potato famine. It is worth checking out more details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmainham_Gaol
The next morning we headed to Barry's sisters pub South of Dublin in Enniskerry a village located in county Wicklow to watch an Irish rugby game. Beautiful scenery along the way and a village with lots of character.
Headed back on the coach to Derry around 5 and off to start classes on Tuesday.
