To get to Hoi An we had a 4 hour bus journey via a city called Da Nang, we could of stayed in Da Nang but decided against it as doesn't appear to be much going on. The coast of Da Nang looked very nice.... apart from the hundreds of stupid resorts being built on the front, completely ruining the landscape and views! When we finally arrived in Hoi An, our bus dropped us at completely the wrong end of town.... nice 15 minute trek across town in the hot temperatures with our backpacks on. Good exercise though, working off all them oreos from the bus journey!
Our first impressions of Hoi An were very good, the streets looked charming, old fashioned and no cars were allowed in certain areas. Hundreds of tailor shops fill the streets. Lucy found a clothes shop unlike any we had come across in Vietnam... it actually had decent clothes in and ones that were to Lucy's taste. She ended up buying a lovely dress for christmas from there. Our first evening we ate at Hai Cafe (highly recommend this place). Lovely garden setting with a barbeque. Lucy loved the calamari and especially the chicken wings.... mmmmmm. Peter's recommendation would have to be the amazing chicken caesar salad, which could quite possibly be the best one he has ever had... and he often has this dish!! When we left the restaurant there was a game going on across the street... Peter gave it a go and looked a right plonker! Basically you have a mask on and can't see a thing. The aim of the game is to smash a pot hanging about 6 foot above the ground on a string, using a baton. The problem is you have to start about 10 foot away from the pot, so when you think you are near, there's a good chance you arent. Peter had two attempts... both resulting in a big swing at fresh air!!! ooops. Later that evening we ended up in a bar playing pool with other backpackers and vietnamese(one was an idiot and made up new rules)!! Also bought cocktails for each other... Peter bought I LOVE YOU and Lucy bought something which peter couldn't even drink!! haha. We also pinched a small present from under the christmas tree, nothing in it obviously.
The next day we did a walking trip around Hoi An's sights. It would of been nicer if the rain had stayed away. The walking tour ended by stopping at a handicrafts place, where the locals put on a performance. We watched on as different artists performed, the funniest part was when a lady was dancing, whilst making stupid faces and noises.... lucy was in histericks!!!! hahaha. She could not stop laughing!!!
Later that day Lucy ordered some new sandals, even having her feet measured by the lady simple just drawing around her foot on a piece of paper! Peter also went and selected materials for a suit and got measured up. That evening we just chilled out with a few beers and got some food... unfortunately at the place we ate, they didn't seem to be good at their timing of bringing meals out! Peter ate his starter and main before Lucys lasagne came out, then followed by her pumpkin soup!!
The following day Lucy had duck in orange sauce for breakfast... apparently one of the best meals since leaving home! After two fittings for his suit Peter finally collected his brand new unique suit. We posted it back home that afternoon, hopefully be home soonish!!!
The rest of the day was spent waiting around for our sleeper bus to pick us up for a trip to Nha Trang for crimbo. Whilst waiting we did have the best cake we've had on our travels... strawberry sponge covered in white chocolate!! Delicious
