We waited around 1hr 30mins for our visas to be issued at the cambodian border and then set off in a mini bus to Phnom Penh. The journey took around 2hr 30mins, going through lovely cambodian countryside and villages. We got dropped off outside Sinh Cafe in the city which were miles away from where we actually wanted to be but we decided to set off walking and save some money, heading towards some guesthouses(Loooong walk.) We located a couple but one was full and the other we weren't keen on, then we walked and walked and walked.... until we finally came to a reasonable place at a reasonable price! Lucy initial feelings on the city were not positive ones.... seemed abit dodgy and we didn't feel completely safe. That evening we had a wander out to find somewhere to eat... we finally found a nice restaurant along way from where we were staying. A little expensive for us but we were starving and just wanted to eat. We decided to get a tuk-tuk back to the guesthouse as we felt it was safer than walking back.
The morning after we just wandered around the city, heading towards the market.. which were lined with security guards holding guns ( we dont know the exact kind, but they looked like machine guns) Edgy was not the word. We also ate in a food court in a shopping centre, we've been to a few of these sort of food courts on our travels... they basically have lots of different food counters serving all sorts of asian dishes.... most of the time we don't know what were getting, we just point at something which looks good! You don't pay cash at the counter though.... you have to get tokens from a cashier in order to purchase anything! Daft if you ask us. We walked round a couple of the city sights and ended up having a few beers at a riverside bar (the nicer side of the city... far from where we were staying!)
That evening Lucy didn't feel the best so we decided that we should stay in and Peter would pop out and find some food to bring back.... Lucy didn't like the idea of Peter walking the city streets on his own in the dark! Peter said he would be around 20min no longer!!! Lucy was a little concerned when Peter had been gone quite a while and didn't return until after about 45minutes. He returned with a can of diet coke and sprite, 2 yogurts... a pork rib.... chicken burger, popcorn chicken and fries!!! Random but good munch!!
The following day we hired a tuk-tuk to take us to the killing fields...
The killing fields are a number of sites over cambodia where large number of people were killed and buried by the Khmer rouge regime during their rule of the country between 1975-1979, immediately after the end of the cambordian civil war.
The place was very moving, we got given a headset each where we could listen to commentary of each area we visited. We saw where mass graves were (even the odd piece of bone coming up from the ground). We listening to horrible stories from people who witnessed horrible things but lived to tell the story. There was a tree where the guards would grab childrens ankles and swing them round so there heads would hit the tree. The centre piece of the site is a tower with hundreds of skulls in it, and clothing of the people who died there. (look at the pictures to get a better image of what were talking about).
Later that day we visited the big clock outside wat Phrom and then had a walk down the riverfront, before heading back to upload pictures and update our blog etc... That evening we ate at a little local restaurant called Mama's, Peter tried sheperds pie (first time we'd seen it on a menu on our travels), wasn't very good.... knowhere near the high standards of our mothers back home.
