We got to sleep in a bit this morning! We were grateful to sleep beyond 4:30 am! We woke feeling very revitalized! We got even more pep in our steps when we opened our curtains and saw THE SUN!!! We have not really seen the sun (cloud free) since May 29th, the day we departed!
We ate breakfast and got going. Our first stop was the Duquesne Incline Railway. We all enjoyed going up in the rail car. At the top we were treated to a beautiful view of Pittsburgh. At least 6 people we met later in the day told us this was a must do; so we were glad we did this first! The incline goes over quite varied rock strata - including the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. This has been judged to be one the world's most major economic resources. Mining began in this Coal Seam in 1760!!! It was crucial to the growth of steel and glass industries in Pittsburgh (huge - think PPG!)!
After the Railway, we headed over to the Carnegie Science Museum. It is one of 4 Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh. They had a fascinating body exhibit. The pictures show that Charlie trained in endoscopy and Mom trained in cyrosurgery - ha ha! Eleanor worked over many areas - her favorite was performing gamma knife surgery. We took a pass on their Omnimax theatre because we took in Omnimax in Toronto. The Carnegie had a retired WWII submarine that could be toured. It felt incredibly small. I've never been claustrophobic, but it sure felt super small! After we spent some more time in the Museum (and a nice cracker break outside with some Canadian geese), we decided to go over to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. I thought it would be a GREAT idea to WALK!!! It was just a little over a mile. I thought that was a great idea! Unfortunately, I did receive some heckling (see the pictures); I did not realize that the walk would be all UPhill! They hung in and were rewarded after dinner with ice cream.
We had a great time at the Children's Museum. Our first stop was a Make Shop. Basically, they had some of everything you could possilby want to craft or tinker! Eleanor made a headband. Mom made this cute ribbon windsock. Charlie tinker with circuits. It was an amazing area. We also enjoyed an area called The Garage. We were all beside our selves laughing when Charlie and Eleanor hopped in their SmartCar with Eleanor in the drivers seat! The kids liked seeing the Wizard of Oz exhibit. That is my least favorite play, but it was a cute exhibit!
After our walk back to our car at the Science Museum (all DOWNhill), we were ready to go to dinner. I had a place in mind - in our binder of planned activities - I had researched this and thought it sounded great. It was tricky to find. When we found it - it was a NO GO! It did not look like an establishment that you would want to take your children! So, we headed for a safer place, had a delicious dinner then the kids and Mom had ice cream. We are all safe and sound back in the hotel. We are incredibly thankful for a glorious day!
