Monday 7th September - Mdina
We were taken for a walking tour of the old town of Mdina. The streets were only 3 abreast in places and others wide enough to take a bread van.
The Cathedral was built on the remains of a Norman in the 13th century and was destroyed in a huge earthquake in 1693. It was rebuilt and finished and consecrated in 1703.
The Cathedrals ceiling is covered with frescos and with a painting depicting the life of St. Paul, who is the patron saint of Malta. St Paul landed in Malta when he was being taken back to Rome to have his head chopped off. The boat that he was on sunk after going aground and St Paul had enough time to convert the Maltese to Christianity. They are a very devout people and there are 365 churches on the island.
Again the interior of the Cathedral is very lavishly decorated.
We finished the tour of Mdina and walked back out over the drawbridge to the waiting bus.
