In Dog Biscuit or Dogubayazit! Crossing to Iran this morning....
Staring up at Mount Ararat where Noah's Ark is meant to be lying!
Have a had a astounding time in the East of Turkey, mainly hanging out with the Kurdish people which are the majority of the population in the East and very friendly! Especially when you speak their language and mention the name of their superstar singer Sivan Pewar!!! (try listening to some of his music - it rocks)!
Van sits on a large salt water lake and has an island off the coast call Aktabar where i visited two days ago, Meeting many Kurdish people along the way. Then on the island i met 8 young kurdish men and they invited me to sing and dance with them for the afternoon! was incredible, and another guy filmed it on my camera (will upload in Iran on a fast computer). completely unbelievable experience! Dancing and singing on an island, looking down on a beautiful old armenian church, on a lake, surrounded by snow capped mountains!!! A highlight of the trip so far!
For your information Mr Millyard, food has had highlights and also some lowlights! Generally kebabs are everywhere, in the form of lamb, chicken and beef. There is not much difference in taste between these 3 meats. In Syria there is delicious freshly made falafel kebabs available as well, but the nutritional value of these is ruined with the amount of oil they are deep fried in! Meze is a very popular and tasty option to mix it up with. Fresh salads and vegetables are also delcious. Along with the fresh bread which is everywhere and very cheap = probably my favorite way to start the day!
Beer in Turkey and Syria is great and cheap and you can also pick up some cheapr Egyptian 10 %'s too!!
So now, i am pretty much kebabed out as it is the easiest thing to find and very cheap (around 20 -50p). I normally just chuck a fresh loaf of bread in the bag (you know how much i like fresh bread)! and thats around 10p for the breakie and lunch!
Listening to a bit of Depeche Mode... time to grab a bus to Iran!!!
take it easy!
