Ni Hao all,
OK, here your Facebook doesn't work and your Google results are not what they used to be, but China still has a lot of other things to offer ;o)
We flew from Hanoi to Shanghai missing our flight for the first time during the trip - finding out time zones can sometimes be more than just annoying! On our first day in Shanghai, we went to the French quarter and were immediately impressed by this city. Trees on the side of the road, friendly people, nice bars and restaurants, great art galleries… was this really China? Fortunately now and then a nice lady started to burp and spit as if it was the most normal thing in the world… Yes, this is definitely China! The Chinese can be seen as rude, they can be loud, but they're also genuine, friendly and funny. Whenever we ordered food, they made an enormous effort to understand what we wanted. The result was often surprisingly good, although hardly ever what we had tried to order in the first place.
After a couple of days in Shanghai, we went to the famous Huangshan Mountain (an inspiration for many Chinese poets, writers and painters). For sure we can say that this place rocks! And we were not the only ones, because for the Chinese this mountain range is one of the biggest attractions in the country.
After some good hikes in Huangshan, we visited 2 nice 'little' towns, Hangzhou and Suzhou (the Venice of the Far East) with both around 6 million inhabitants. In Hangzhou we saw an open-air performance from the director who also did the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. This was really an amazing show taking place on the big lake. More than 150 actors and acrobats were dancing and flying over the water.
Back in Shanghai we realized that China was really one of our favorite destinations, also thanks to these great Chinese people.
Wow, time does fly, one country left to visit. Fortunately we still have 3 weeks to discover it… JAPAN!
See you at our next and last blog from Tokyo!
Sayonara,
Harald and Sylvie
