At the foothills of the Andes and surrounded by desert, Santiago has quiet clean streets and is full of parks and Museums. It really gives the impression that Chile is wealthier than in reality because as soon as you head out of the center the beautiful new shiny buildings give way to shanty towns. It was a cool city with nice people, bars and an interesting recent history of a questionable military government. In one of the bigger parks you can take a cable car to the top of mountain and see fantastic views of the city and surrounding area although the cable car is in need of some serious maintenance. Very dubious! In fact someone told us a week later that when they were there the car wasn't in operation. Would not like to have been there when the brakes failed on that bad boy. After a free walking tour we discovered the student area which was full of basic bars spilling out on to the streets and the real drawcard- cheap beer!!. I also had my first Pisco Sour which was delightful (I don´t think one has been as good since) and a weird corn dish called Pastel De Choclo which was like a sweet corn caserole. Not that amazing to say the least. Ill opt for the Pico Sour in the future!
