After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we are ready for our 6:10 minibus pick. Eventually it arrives at 6:50. Apparently, another couple of tourists, also heading for Tortuguero but with another bus company, had inadvertently jumped in to our seats and the driver hadn't realised until a few miles in to the journey. The bus journey takes about 4 hours with a second breakfast on route where we spot some poisonous frogs in the restaurant gardens.
Arrived Tortuguero about 1pm after a leisurely boat trip from La Pavona. The boat stopped as and when wildlife was spotted in the jungle at either side of the wide canal giving the passengers the opportunity for close up views. We were met from the boat by Castor, a local wildlife guide who walked with us the short distance to The Miss Miriam Hotel which we've booked for three nights. The hotel , a simple two storey lodge in a very peaceful setting on the edge of the playing fields mid way between the village and the beach. There seems to be only one other resident.
Tortuguero is named from the thousands of leather back and green back turtles which come to lay their eggs on the carribean beach. The village itself can be reached only by boat or the small airstrip. There are no vehicles in the village and most of the residents are involved with tourism in some way or other.
We are just a short walk to the beach but swimming is out of the question because of strong rip tides so we have a wander along the edge hoping to see some hatchling turtles
