Hohenschwangau Castle
This castle was built by King Maximilian of Germany on the ruins of the old medieval castle of Schwanstein. The castle is just beautiful and was used as a hunting lodge/holiday residence by Maximilian and his family including his son Ludwig. The castle was built in the 1800's and is sited on a hill with stunning views over the countryside to the mountains and lakes close by. King Ludwig grew up in this castle and when he came to power decided to build his own castle Neuschwanstein close by on a rocky outcrop around 2 kilometers away.
