This beautiful fairytale castle was built in the 1860s atop a very rocky outcrop and took 17 years to build. The interior was never fully completed and remains so today. The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig of Germany but the government of the time stepped in and refused to allow it to be completed due to the extreme amounts of money being spent on it. Ludwig was declared insane and taken in to care but drowned under suspicious circumstances some days later. The castle is beautiful and must have been a mammoth project for the time as it is built in a very mountainous region. The views are spectacular both from and to the castle, this photo was taken from a suspension bridge down the valley which seems to have no purpose other than to view the castle from. Tourists flock to this area and we imagine the castle cost would have been recouped log ago so maybe King Ludwig was not mad afterall.
