Nullarbor - Great Australian Bight - SA/WA Border - Eucla - Balladonia
"I like it like that, hey windows down chillin with the radio on...."
Our picturesque clifftop campsite was hit with a Force 6 wind during the night which rocked the van. Almost lost our doormats forever - saved by our table which was in the way!
We watched the first light dawn of a new day from our bedroom window and whilst it was still quite windy - the sunrise was a good one to watch from our waterfront location.
We hit the road at about 7.30am and cruised along the Great Australian Bight stopping at most of the turn offs to get a look at the different views of the cliff faces. At one we saw a nice right tubing wave too! Pity a pack of sharks were cruising off the same break - no one out either!!
From there we finished the remaining 50 odd k's to the WA border - first time for 4 CMJs. After quarantine had gone through every place that they thought we could hide fruit & veges, we stopped at the border for a crossing pic. It was then onto Eucla - still no mobile coverage - none for the whole of the Nullarbor!
From just over the border to just past Eucla we were racing against about 8 x V8 super cars we met on the road!! We were no match unfortunately for them in the Disco though with the Van attached - it was a pity too that they were safely housed in their B double towing rigs !!!
We drove through Mundrabilla and stopped for lunch at the truck stop & fueled and then to Caiguna for more fuel - crickey $2.01 per litre! Lucky I only needed to top her tank up!!
We then hit the 90 mile straight- the longest straight road in Australia at 146.6 kms long. Several short and refreshing rain showers hit us during the 90 mile which washed some of the dirt off the car and van and made the air smell great. Seems like the kangaroos also liked the rain showers too as they all started congregating by the roadside to drink from the pools of water forming on the road . Made driving all that more interesting - get off the road Skippy!!
Our bush camp tonight is 50ks east of Balladonia at Woorlba Homestead rest area. We had dinner next to our campfire and the kids finally got to toast marshmallows.
Tomorrow we will head for Kalgoorlie and Gold country!
Travelled 819 Kms today.
