Well, The Great Smoky Mountains was our turn around point. Time to head west. We left around 8:45am heading for Russell Springs KY, our next "passing thru" stop to our next destination, Mamoth Caves National Park.
The shortest route took us back through the park. This time of the year, the scenery changes every day. Today was no different. I took a picture of the same scene and compared it to the one I took yesterday. You can definitely see the change in colors...just spectacular.
This is one busy place. We encountered a parade of cars coming in to the park from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The Great Smoky National Park rightfully has earned the distinction of being one of the top three most visited Parks.
We had to pass through Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge on our way to Russell Springs KY. The towns were absolutey jamming with people in the morning. There was a line around the block for the Pancake Pantry. We so glad to get out of the area. Our route took us on alot of two lane roads through the countryside and small towns. The shades of autumn were a dramatic background for the pristine white churches and country homes along our route. We stopped in Oneida Ky, Population 410, for lunch at Phillips Drive-In. You can't go wrong with a good ol' hamburger and fries.
We arrived at Russel Springs KOA, our destination for the night around 3pm. This KOA is seasonal and will be closing for the season at the end of October. It is very close to Lake Cumberland, "Houseboat Capital of the World". Walt and Barb wanted to relax and prep for dinner, but Bob and I took advantage of the "country style" tennis court (blacktop) and played a little pickleball.
We walked down to Walt's and Barb's site for cards and dinner. We were treated to another serving of his famous Spaghetti Sauce accompanied by a freshly tossed salad.
Tomorrow, we head for Mamoth Cave National Park then on to Nashville TN!
