Day 61 - Friday March 15, 2024, Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) Malaysia
Arrival: 07:00 All Aboard: 16:30 Departure: 17:00
We are still on the island of Borneo however in another country. Insignia arrives at Kota Kinabalu at 06:30 with two tugboats pushing the ship towards the dock.
Kota Kinabalu is part of Malaysia. As mentioned earlier, the third country on this island is Brunei. The Sabah International Convention Centre appears on the waterfront. Several high-rises overlook the harbour as does the Hyatt Hotel.
Today we have booked the Mari Mari Cultural Village through Viator. We need to be more precise with our meeting points in the future as once we leave the ship, we do not have a roaming package. In our case the driver (not a guide) had sent the colour and license plate of his car after we left the ship and did not have a sign.
We probably passed his car looking for WIFI. As Janice said he must have seen two white people (us) walking past him looking lost lol.
He was not too happy when we arrived and just drove us to the cultural village about 30 minutes outside Kota Kinabalu. He then stayed at the village until the tour was over three hours later.
Several tours were operated by the ship and had arrived before us. Our group of 14 included two Frenchwomen, several from China and the balance from Malaysia.
The village was created to allow people to understand the history and culture of the five tribes that existed in the past. The village was very realistic to what the people of the time would have experienced.
A traditional dance was performed after we visited the five tribal houses followed by a lunch of chicken and rice.
Afterwards we found our driver and were driven back to the city. He did not ask how the tour was. You can guess how much tip we left?
Our next port of call is Manila, Philippines 605 nautical miles away.
